MPUMALANGA means ‘place where the sun rises’. It is bordered by Mozambique and Swaziland in the east, and Gauteng in the west. It is mainly situated on the high plateau grasslands of the Middleveld, which roll eastwards for hundreds of kilometres. In the north-east, it rises towards mountain peaks and then terminates in an immense and breathtaking escarpment. In some places, this escarpment plunges hundreds of metres down to the low-lying area known as the Lowveld. The province falls mainly within the Grassland biome. The Escarpment and the Lowveld form a transitional zone between this grassland area and the Savannah biome. Long sweeps of undulating grasslands abruptly change to the thickly forested ravines and thundering waterfalls of the Escarpment, only to change again to present the subtropical wildlife splendour of the Lowveld. Forestry plantations are an ideal backdrop for ecotourism opportunities, with a variety of much sought-after hiking trails, a myriad of waterfalls, patches of indigenous forest and a variety of nature reserves. Lake Chrissie is the largest natural freshwater lake in South Africa and is famous for its variety of aquatic birds, especially flamingos.

LIMPOPO lies within the great elbow of the Limpopo River, and is a province of dramatic contrasts from true Bushveld country to majestic mountains, primeval indigenous forests, latter-day plantations, unspoilt wilderness areas and a patchwork of farming land. This province is in the Savannah biome; an area of mixed grassland and trees, which is generally known as Bushveld. A trip through this summer-rainfall area soon convinces one that this is tree country. The biggest section of the Kruger National Park is situated along the eastern boundary of Limpopo with Mozambique.

THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE has Botswana as its northern neighbour. Rolling fields of maize, golden sunflowers and vast areas of bushveld covered in thorn trees stretch as far as the eye can see. The North-West falls almost entirely within the Savannah biome (Bushveld), with the exception of the southern part which is part of the Grassland biome.

  • The town of Louis Trichardt emerged out of the settlements of Dutch Voortrekkers. The Dutchman, Louis Trichardt arrived at the foot of the Soutpansberg mountains in 1836. For almost a year Trichardt’s little community planted crops and explored the country. Some time later Trichardt and his followers decided to move on east but 26 out of 53 succumbed to Malaria and other diseases. Ten years later, Hendrik Potgieter settled and a town developed in the area that Trichard had left behind. The Northern Province was positively bursting with game and an unruly crowd of hunters and ivory traders made this town their base. Conditions became increasingly chaotic and the endless brawling and fighting with the local Bavenda tribes finally destroyed the place. Louis Trichardt was finally abandoned by the Europeans in 1867. Over 30 years later the Transvaal Republic regained control and proclaimed the town the administrative centre. Today tropical fruits, tea, coffee and timber are produced from the fertile land but visitors tend to be coming or going to the Kruger National Park to see the game that no longer roams free in these hills.

Rare finds of yellowwood and cedar trees, five metre high cycads and tree ferns, are some of the plant species found here. LOUIS TRICHARDT

The town of Louis Trichardt emerged out of the settlements of Dutch Voortrekkers.

    THABAZIMBI/MARAKELE NATIONAL PARK

Thabazimbi means Iron Mountain and the town is the gateway to the Makakele National Park. The Marakele National Park in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains, as its Tswana name suggests, has become a 'place of sanctuary' for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa. Contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys characterize the park. Rare finds of yellowwood and cedar trees, five metre high cycads and tree ferns, are some of the plant species found here. All the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds including what’s probably the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures (more than 800 breeding pairs) in the world, have settled here. Marakele National Park is currently divided into two parts (namely the +/- 2500 ha ‘Kwaggasvlakte’ section and the Greater Marakele National Park), by a public gravel road (the Hoopdal Road). Most parts of the park are only accessible by 4x4.
